Toward Forgiveness

My teacher always said that forgiving was not an act, but an inner state. Similar to light that falls upon whatever comes in front of it, when we are in a state of forgiving, we forgive anyone, without any judgment. We use the term 'I have forgiven'; my teacher used to say that the 'I' cannot forgive. Forgiveness can only be brought about with the dissolution of ego.
 

For us, forgiving is an act. We must strive to practice as often as we can. If we can observe ourselves a little, we will see how easily we take offense at the smallest provocation. We feel hurt and resent being criticized. Say, a child may feel s/he is not being appreciated, a husband may feel that his wife does not understand him, an employee may feel that his boss is overworking him, and so on. We also feel someone has been disloyal to us. We hold on to many grudges, which are like open wounds in the subconscious. 

 

We continuously hold tension, remain volatile and angry, slowly leading to a neurotic state where our minds chatter all the time, narrow our perception, make us rigid, sour, bitter, revengeful, jealous, moody, and fatigued. This not only ruins our psychological health, but over a period of time also affects our physical well-being. Once we are in a highly strung-up state, we get caught in everything that does not go our way, in turn leading to irritation and holding a constant resentment that life is not fair.

 

Forgiveness is a conscious decision to let go of such resentment; to drop the act or the grudge that we are holding, to relax from within and enjoy letting go of the burden. Whenever we feel hurt, just pause, weigh the grievance, see the damage it will cause us, and will it away. We do not need to excuse or condone the act, we just forgive the other.
 

Another way is being in the other person's shoes. We never try to put ourselves in others' situation, and always want people to realise our difficulties. We must learn to empathise, true sympathy automatically follows.

 

If we keep practicing in the small acts of living, one day the lamp will be lit, and forgiveness will become second nature.

WORLD AIDS DAY LET US JOIN HANDS FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

What Is AIDS? 
AIDS is the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a serious illness that harms the body's ability to fight infection. A person with AIDS is unable to fight certain infections and cancers that are usually mild or rare in healthy people.

A virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) causes AIDS. A person infected with HIV -

• May pass the virus to others
• Show no signs of infections
• Develop symptoms of HIV infections
• Develop AIDS

AIDS Is A Spectrum of Diseases!
As of now, there is no cure for AIDS. As the name indicates, AIDS is a syndrome, which means that it's a spectrum of diseases. At one end of the spectrum, a person infected with AIDS has no problems, apparently he is absolutely fine.

Towards the other end of the spectrum, the person develops AIDS, showing signs and symptoms of diseases that are rarely detected in a healthy individual. On an average, there is a time gap of 5- 10 years between the two ends of the spectrum; and once the person develops AIDS then life expectancy is usually an year or so.
How Common Is AIDS In India?
AIDS is catching up rapidly in India. By 1996, there have been 2.5 million cases detected as HIV +ve and almost 30,000 have developed AIDS.
What Happens Inside the Body when HIV Enters? 
HIV as the name indicates, attacks the immune system of the body making it weaker and weaker. In our body, the cells called as lymphocytes act as the police force against any infection. HIV slowly and persistently destroys this police force.

Usually it takes 5-10 years before the body can no longer defend. At this point the person starts developing certain diseases that are very rare in a healthy individual.

How Is HIV Passed From One Person to Another?
AIDS spreads through sexual contact and through blood and blood products. Thus HIV can spread through -

Sexual intercourse with an infected person -
AIDS This includes vaginal, anal and oral intercourse.

By sharing an infected needle or syringe -AIDS This includes vaginal, anal and oral intercourse.

 
Through blood and blood products -
This may occur with blood transfusion, if the donor's blood has not been checked for HIV. 

Now it is mandatory to check every unit of blood collected in the blood bank for the presence of HIV antibodies. If the blood is found to be HIV +ve then that blood is discarded.

From an infected mother to her baby -

This Mother can pass the virus in three ways:

• To her unborn baby before birth
• During the process of birth
• <After birth through breast-feeding

HIV Does NOT Spread By Casual Contact 

Current research shows that HIV is not spread through casual contact or through air. Casual contact is the kind you have with people during everyday activities, such as -

Sitting next to someone at work, on a bus or a train or elsewhere. Touching, hugging or shaking hands Eating in a restaurant Having contact with towels, linens, etc. Donating blood Swimming in a pool Being beaten by mosquitoes or other insects

Effects on the Body

When HIV infects the body, different effects are possible.

Most people do not show any signs of infection

During the incubation period, which can vary from a few months to a few years, the person does not show any signs of infection. They look and feel healthy but they can still pass the virus to others.

Some people go on to develop symptoms of HIV infection 

As the infection progresses, symptoms become apparent. It may take many years for symptoms to appear. Symptoms may include -

• Fever and night sweats
• Rapid unexplained weight loss
• Swollen glands in the neck, underarm and groin
• Constant tiredness and loss of appetite
• White spots in the mouth

Though these symptoms do not necessarily indicate AIDS, it is better to take your physician's opinion if these symptoms have been present for more than a week.

Some people infected with HIV develop aids 

Their immune system becomes very weak, turning normally mild, harmless and rare diseases into potentially fatal diseases. These include various types of viral fungal and bacterial diseases such as -

• Fever and night sweats
• Rapid unexplained weight loss
• Swollen glands in the neck, underarm and groin
• Constant tiredness and loss of appetite
• White spots in the mouth

HIV may also attack the nervous system

This may produce -

• Confusion
• Forgetfulness
• A non-caring attitude
• Inability to make decisions
• Problems with coordination

Is There A Test for Aids?

There is a blood test that shows if HIV had ever infected a person. The test looks for HIV antibodies. These antibodies are the signs that the person has been infected. They usually develop within 6 months of infection. 

So if a person has been infected with HIV less than 6 months ago, then the test result may come as negative in which case it is safer to get retested after 6 months.

  Is There A Cure for AIDS? 

No. There is no cure for AIDS as of now. But researchers are working hard to find ways to help people who have AIDS and to prevent others from getting AIDS. Various Antiviral drugs have been tried to treat HIV,

• Drugs to prevent HIV from reproducing
• Drugs to boost the immune system

Surgery, radiation and other drug treatments -

To help patients overcome infections and cancers commonly found in people infected with HIV.

However no treatment has yet been successful in completely restoring the immune system of the body.

As explained earlier, HIV attacks the body's immune system, the body's natural defense against disease. Damage to the immune system leaves the body vulnerable to secondary illnesses that can be fatal.

Protect Yourself from HIV:Not having sex is safest -

Abstinence from sex is the only sure way to avoid HIV, other sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.
If you decide to have sex, always use condom -

Though condoms are not full proof, but when used properly they are highly effective in preventing HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Do not shoot drugs -
Sharing needles is a dangerously easy way to pass HIV infections. Try and quit drugs. If you can not quit right away, STOP sharing needles or syringes.

Postpone Pregnancy -

If you think you are likely to have been infected with AIDS and contact your physician.

Postpone Pregnancy -

• Know how HIV is and is not spread
• Do not let anyone pressurise you into having sex
• Do not shoot drugs of any kind
• Use a latex condom if you decide to have sex
• Follow the above mentioned tips to lead a healthy and a happy life.

Some of the common problems faced by the children of your age are given below:   Literacy Forbidden: Children are frequently denied their right to an education on equal terms with their peers. They are denied their right based on various factors.  Children in conflict zones face tremendous dangers to reach schools in place where tension prevails. Due to family situations, there are many children dropped out of the school in their early ages.  Worldwide children are harassed as they either belong to different social group or differ in color or belong to different religion and thus are undermined their opportunities to learn. It causes them to drop out of schools resulting in psychological trauma, physical and metal stress and even to death.  Terrorism: Terrorist groups recruit and some time compel children to fight for their cause as Child Soldiers. This is a common practice in some of the countries in the world. They are either abducted or forced to join as soldiers. Children from the age group of 8-18 are recruited for this. In some countries children in the age group of 7 - 12 are trained as Paramilitaries.   Malnutrition: Children of Third world countries are greatly affected by famine. Most of them suffer from Malnutrition and some are affected to the extreme level of starvation to death. Due to the economic conditions of these countries the availability of food is very less. Children in some of the under developed countries are attacked by chronic diseases and die due to lack of proper medical facilities to treat them.   Refugee and Migrant: Children who migrate along due to war or famine are prone to the risk of abuse when they are separated from their parents and caregivers. When they are left unsecured, they can't get food, shelter and clothes. They are branded as "ORPHANS" and their future turns out to be horrible.   Child Labour: Children are pledged for some amount to reduce the financial burden in some families. When their parents fail to clear the debts, the owners prison the children and put them as child labourers in their factories, shops or fields.   In some families children are sent to work to earn the bread of the day for the family. Normally children are recruited everywhere. Be it a mill, newspaper distribution, mines, factories, hotels, etc., Some children are forced to rag picking, begging and smuggling.   There is no product that has not been scented by the sweat of a child labourer. Such kind of problems attack the normal physical, intellectual, emotional and moral development of a child. Children who are in the growing process can permanently distort or disable their bodies when they carry heavy stress and loads of suffering on them. Children are less resistant to diseases and suffer the most.  Those children who suffer in their childhood are prone to become rogues, terrorists, thieves and anti-social elements. A child instead of becoming a good youth and further an element of making a good society takes the shape of the above.   But you children, how much more are you privileged and blessed than the children who are caught in the above problems. You have good parents who give us good food, colorful clothes, beautiful home, high-class education, modern toys, and what not. Are we truthful to the Almighty God who provides everything to us through our parents?   God says, "I will bless you and you shall be a blessing". Yes, God has blessed us because He wants us to bless others. We are under the wings of the Almighty, so we are safe and sound. But let us think about the children who have never tasted happiness in their life in this world. Let us not grumble ourselves that we are forbidden with some trivial things for which we are adamant. Next time when you see any children suffering don't show faces but show them your love and affection.  Let us understand the problems of the Children who suffer and let's uphold them in our prayers to turn their sufferings into joy. Our simple action could bring somewhere a change to somebody. Let's intercede for such kind of children to our Almighty God to make a better world tomorrow.    Start each day with thanks to God for the night of rest: Then put your day in God's good hands, for He alone knows the best.
