Nails and Health: Read the Signs

Yellow Nails

Bluish Nails

Rippled Nails

Cracked or Split Nails

Dry, brittle nails that frequently crack
or split have been linked to thyroid disease. Cracking or splitting
combined with a yellowish hue is more likely due to a fungal infection

Puffy Nail Fold

If the skin around the nail appears red
and puffy, this is known as inflammation of the nail fold. It may be
the result of lupus or another connective tissue disorder.

Dark Lines Beneath the Nail

Dark lines beneath the nail should be
investigated as soon as possible. They are sometimes caused by
melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Gnawed Nails

Biting your nails may be nothing more than
an old habit, but in some cases its a sign of persistent anxiety that
could benefit from treatment. Nail biting or picking has also been
linked to obsessive-compulsiv e disorder. If you cant stop, its worth
discussing with your doctor.

Nails Are Only Part of the Puzzle

Though nail changes accompany many
conditions, these changes are rarely the first sign. And many nail
abnormalities are harmless -- not everyone with white nails has
hepatitis. If youre concerned about the appearance of your nails, see
a skin doctor dermatologist or a Physician.

Top 10 Fun Ways To Prevent Cancer Through Exercise==AWARENESS--INFORMATION

Top 10 Fun Ways To Prevent Cancer Through Exercise

The American Cancer Society recommends exercising 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week for cancer prevention. If you cringe at the word “ exercise” check out these fun ways for fitness. You will have so much fun, you won’t even consider it to be working out!

1) Walking

Walking has many health benefits, such as cancer and other disease prevention. Instead of using the treadmill, walk outdoors. If you can find a safe sidewalk, or park, you can walk! Bring headphones and listen to music, or even an audiobook.

Make it a family event! Exercise is

important for children, too! Plus, if kids

are involved, they won’t ever let you

forget when it time to take a walk!

2) Yoga

If you have never done Yoga before, why not start a beginners’ class? Yoga is a great physical activity and is a great stress reliever. Don’t worry if you are not flexible; you will work your way up each class. Bringing a friend to class with you makes it easier and less intimidating. Once you learn the basic, you can do the exercises at home in your free time.

3) Dancing

Dancing can be the most fun way to meet fitness goals. You can dance in the privacy of your living room, or go to a club. If you have two left feet, try a dance class! Learn salsa, ballroom dancing or even the meringue! There are so many types of dance to learn, you can’t go wrong.

4) Rollerblading

Rollerbalding just isn’t for the kids! Make sure you have the proper protective gear like a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and have a go at rollerblading! It is very cardiovascular and works out all muscle of the body. Don’t worry if you don’t get it at first, practice makes perfect!

5) Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a chinese martial art that pomotes health through slow moving exercises and breathing techniques. It is also meditative. Classes can be taught in a group setting or in private classes. Many seniors prectice tai chi for it’s health benefits.

6) Join A Team Sport

Joining a team sport like softball, volleyball, and soccer can be tons of fun! Oraganized sports are sometimes offered through the workplace and recreation centers. If your workplace doesn’t have one, why not organize a sport? You’ll meet new people and engage in healthy competition.

7) Swimming

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise! You workout out all muscles of the body, and it can be very cardiovacsular. Many gyms or YMCA’s offer opem swim sessions. If you don’t know how to swim, lessons are available for adults. You can also try water aerobcs.

What is Cholera?

Cholera is an infection of the small intestine caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It occurs in epidemics when conditions of poor sanitation, crowding, war, and famine are present.
Cholera is a serious condition. A severe case of cholera can lead to death without immediate treatment.
Cholera is also called V. cholerae and Vibrio.
What Causes Cholera?

The most common cause of cholera is by someone eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with the bacteria.
After a disaster, this is a very real danger, since regular, clean water and food supplies are often unavailable. The disease can be spread even further by infected people using already dirty water sources to clean themselves or dispose of waste.
Symptoms of Cholera?

There are many symptoms of cholera. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe. The most common symptoms of cholera are:
  • sudden onset of watery diarrhea, up to 1 liter (quart) per hour
  • diarrhea has a “rice water” appearance, where the stool looks like water with flecks of rice in it
  • diarrhea has a “fishy” odor
  • dehydration
  • rapid heart rate
  • dry skin
  • dry mucus membranes or dry mouth
  • excessive thirst
  • “glassy” eyes or sunken eyes
  • unusual sleepiness or tiredness
  • low urine output
  • abdominal cramps
  • nausea
  • vomiting
Can Cholera be Prevented?

Yes. There are two vaccines that provide short-term, limited protection against the cholera bacteria. However, the vaccines are not currently available in the United States .
If you do not have access to the vaccines and you are traveling outside of the United States , take precautions with food and drinking water.

Some common precautions are:
  • Drink only water that you have boiled or treated with chlorine or iodine.
  • Eat only food that’s been thoroughly cooked and is still hot, or fruit that you’ve peeled yourself.
  • Avoid undercooked or raw fish and shellfish.
  • Avoid raw salads and vegetables.
  • Avoid food and drinks from street vendors
Can Cholera be Treated?

Yes. It is very important to visit a doctor so cholera can be treated immediately.

Follow the mentioned tips to lead a healthy and a happy life.

LATEST CANCER INFORMATION.. .HEALTH-AWARENESS=

LATEST CANCER INFORMATION..
.HEALTH-AWARENESS=

From: PNN Iyer

Subject: LATEST CANCER INFO….
AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO COMBAT CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY…

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. 2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime. 3.
When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be
destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could
be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system. 6.
Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and
also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow,
gastro-intestinal tract etc., and can cause organ damage, like liver,
kidneys, heart, lungs etc.
7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8.
Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce
tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not
result in more tumor destruction.
9.
When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation
the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person
can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.
10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a.

Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful.
A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only
in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white
in colour. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt.

b.
Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved.

c.

Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.
A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little
chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock
antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful,
especially to people with cancer.

d.

A
diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts
and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment.
About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable
juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to
cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of
healthy cells
.

To
obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh
vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some
raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e.

Avoid
coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a
better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water–best to
drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy
metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.
12. Meat
protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes.
Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads
to more toxic buildup.

13.
Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or
eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of
cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer
cells.

14.
Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac,
anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own
killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E
are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger,
unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic
environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to
relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Tinnitus - Effective Treatments

Tinnitus - Effective Treatments

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a ringing, swishing, or other type of noise that seems to
originate in the ear or head. In many cases it is not a serious problem, but
rather a nuisance that eventually resolves.
It is not a single disease, but a symptom of an underlying condition. Nearly
36 million Americans suffer from this disorder. In almost all cases, only the
patient can hear the noise.

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus can arise in any of the following areas: the outer ear, the middle
ear, the inner ear, or by abnormailities in the brain. Some tinnitus or head
noise is normal. If one goes into a sound proof booth and normal outside noise
is diminished, one becomes aware of these normal sounds. We are usually not
aware of these normal body sounds, because outside noise masks them. Anything,
such as wax or a foreign body in the external ear, that blocks these background
sounds will cause us to be more aware of our own head sounds. Fluid, infection,
or disease of the middle ear bones or ear drum (tympanic membrane) can also
cause tinnitus.
One of the most common causes of tinnitus is damage to the microscopic
endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Advancing age is generally
accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment, and consequently
tinnitus. Today, loud noise
exposure
is a very common cause of tinnitus, and it often damages hearing as
well. Unfortunately, many people are unconcerned about the harmful effects of
excessively loud noise, firearms, and high intensity music. Some medications
(for example, aspirin) and
other diseases of the inner ear (Meniere’s syndrome) can cause
tinnitus. Tinnitus can in very rare situations be a symptom of such serious
problems as an aneurysm or a
brain tumor (acoustic tumor).

How is tinnitus evaluated?

A medical history, physical examination, and a series of special tests can
help determine precisely where the tinnitus is originating. It is helpful for
the doctor to know if the tinnitus is constant, intermittent or pulsating
(synchronous with the heart beat), or is it associated with hearing loss or loss of balance
(vertigo). All patients with
persisting unexplained tinnitus need a hearing test (audiogram). Patterns of
hearing loss may lead the doctor to the diagnosis.
Other tests, such as the auditory brain stem response (ABR), a computerized
test of the hearing nerves and brain pathways, computer tomography scan (CT scan) or, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI
scan) may be needed to rule out a tumor occurring on the hearing or balance
nerve. These tumors are rare, but they can cause tinnitus.

What is the treatment of tinnitus?

After a careful evaluation, your doctor may find an identifiable cause and be
able to treat or make recommendations to treat the tinnitus. Once you have had a
thorough evaluation, an essential part of treatment is your own understanding of
the tinnitus (what has caused it, and your options for treatment).
In many cases, there is no specific treatment for tinnitus. It may simply go
away on its own, or it may be a permanent disability that the patient will have
to “live with.” Some otolaryngologists have recommended niacin to treat tinnitus.
However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that niacin helps reduce
tinnitus, and it may cause problems with skin flushing.

Can tinnitus be prevented?

Do not place objects in your ear such as cotton swabs (Q-tips) to clean your
ear. This can cause a wax impaction against your eardrum which can cause
tinnitus. Take blood pressure
medicines
and other prescribed medications as they are ordered by your
doctor.
According to the American Tinnitus Association there are several things you
can do to protect yourself from excessive noise related tinnitus:
  • Protect your hearing at work. Your work place should follow Occupational
Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Wear ear plugs or
earmuffs and follow hearing conservation guidelines set by your
    employer.
  • When around any noise that bothers your ears (a concert, sporting event,
hunting) wear hearing protection or reduce noise levels.
  • Even everyday noises,
such as blow drying your hair or using a lawnmower, can require protection. Keep
ear plugs or earmuffs handy for these activities.

Is there anything to do to lessen intensity of the tinnitus?

It is important to realize that the hearing system is one of the most
delicate and sensitive mechanisms in the body. Since it is a part of the general
nervous system, it is sensitive, to some degree, by anything that affects the
overall health of the individual (both physical and psychological). Therefore,
in order to lessen the intensity of tinnitus, it is advisable to make every
effort to:
  • Avoid exposure to loud sounds and noises.
  • Control blood pressure.
  • Decrease salt intake.
  • Avoid nerve stimulants such as coffee and colas (caffeine) and tobacco (nicotine).
  • Reduce anxiety.
  • Try to stop worrying about the tinnitus. Often, the more you worry and
concentrate on the noise, the louder it will become.
  • Get adequate rest and avoid fatigue.
  • Exercise.
  • Utilize masking noise. Tinnitus is usually more bothersome when the
surroundings are quiet, especially when you are in bed. A competing sound such
as a ticking clock, a radio, a fan or white noise machine may help mask
tinnitus. Small hearing aid like devices which generate a competitive sound may
help reduce the awareness of the tinnitus.
  • Biofeedback may help or
    diminish tinnitus in some patients.
  • Avoid aspirin or aspirin products in large quantities.

Tinnitus At A Glance
  • Tinnitus is abnormal ear noise.
  • Tinnitus can arise in any of the four sections of the ear: the outer ear,
the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain.
  • Persisting unexplained tinnitus is evaluated with a hearing test
    (audiogram).
  • Measures can be taken to lessen the intensity of tinnitus.
